I just figured I'd point out that I did, in fact, delete a number of entries. You know, posts that talked about things that were very, very old news. No big deal.
I'm going to probably work on this script a bunch more tonight. Lets see if I can at least incorporate one window outside of the terminal!
Have a good Friday! |

Well, I've taken up programming since my last post, and I believe that I've become rather skilled at it by now. However, I have only written minor scripts (granted, some of them perform some rather nifty functions) and I've only written code that displays content in a terminal. And so... I've decided to take on my first 'big' project.
Here's the problem: I play GemStone IV, a MUD, or text-based online roleplaying game. It comes with many Front Ends (interfaces for the game), but none of them are written for Linux. Now, I've never been a Linux user... until now. But! I want to continue playing GemStone IV. I can use an old, obsolete front end through WINE (a Windows emulator), but I can't get other such Front Ends to work through WINE, like my preferred one. And so, I decided... I would simply write one for Linux, because it is a niche that should've been filled a long time ago.
Here's where I am: I've written a terminal-based front end (think of playing a game through a DOS prompt), and I'm working on making more window-based. All of the information that is getting displayed in the Terminal, I'm slowly redirecting the output to windows. Granted, my progress on that is... 0%. I'm still learning the window interface (Gtk) for the Ruby Programming Language.
Anyway... I've never used this LiveJournal much. I'm gonna try to keep working on this thing up until completion, and maybe talking about it to... no one in particular, will keep me motivated. I don't have many Linux-using friends out there, but they might appreciate my work. |

So, I seem to remember that there is a guy that I knew back in middle school that still owes me a dollar. He borrowed it and *gasp* never paid me back! I remember asking him for it, and he'd always say he didn't have it. In fact... when we got to high school I'd ask him for said dollar every time I saw him. He'd get so irritated, too, which only prompted me to ask the next time I saw him. He eventually told me that he was never going to pay me back the dollar, unless he won the lottery. He was in such a fit of rage that... I had to ask again the next time I saw him.
So, that begs the question: Colin, where's my dollar?Current Mood: good Current Music: Gravity Kills - Blame

I just woke from a nap. The nap came after driving to Shepherdstown, WV and back to fix a non-existant "leak." This morning, I drove to the District of Columbia to replace a motor starter relay that had a bad coil. After seeing how many wires I would have to disconnect and reconnect to a 480V circuit, I decided that I could simplify my job by merely replacing the coil. That made the job into undoing 4 screws, disconnecting two wires, pulling out a coil and a block of iron, refitting the new coil into that same spot with the block of iron, screwing those screws in, and replacing those two wires. Job's done! Of course, the real test is when you close the disconnect switch for the entire unit. I'm not sure what'd happen if I crossed those two wires on the coil. I like to imagine not much, but I've fried so much electrical equipment in my lifetime that I still worry about such things even in simple jobs. Not to mention... I'm not an electrician. I'm just... conveniently available and knowledgable enough to do electrial work, apparantly.
As far as I know, I'm a mechanic and a plumber. Those are titles that I accept because I have extensive knowledge in those fields. I can do computer repairs, often involving low voltage stuff, and I consider myself rather good at that, but stuff above 120 VAC (like the 480 VAC stuff, mentioned above) scares me. Not to mention, it's three phase, and being three phase means that crossing any two phases will reverse the compressor motor that the motor starter... starts and runs. The compressor runs backwards, things break. That's thousands of dollars to repair. I like my job. I don't want to lose it because I'm not an electrician. The reason for this internal debate (replacing the coil vs. replacing the entire motor starter) is because my superior asked me to replace the whole motor starter when he learned that replacement parts do not include just the coil. He believed that, since I have to get the whole motor starter to get the coil, I should replace everything because the equipment is old and it wouldn't hurt to use everything. "The contactors might be bad," he says. I say hire an electrician or train me to be a fully fledged electrician. Otherwise, I'm not doing wiring jobs that extensively and of that voltage.
Mind you, when I do the plumbing and the mechanical work, I love my job. I just hate doing things I'm not familiar with.Current Mood: awake Current Music: Run Lola Run soundtrack - Somebody Has to Pay

Yeah, it's becomming a once a year thing, now. I guess, seeing as my life has been a lot more positive, I've a lot less stuff to whine about. Typical! I'm living in Maryland, at the moment, just so the world knows. I'm probably not going anywhere for a while, depends on how long I keep my current job, which is with Air Liquide, a company that specializes in Industrial Gas.
I'm still single. Seems to be a semi-perpetual thing, now, not that I mind too much. It allows me to flirt with the girls I meet shamelessly. No one seems to mind, so it's all good.Current Mood: happy Current Music: Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

| » Update! |
Man, I haven't used this thing in ages. Leaving Kim a message on her journal prompted this update, amusingly.
It's good how things change, over time. I disliked the Navy, so I got out. While the experienced I gained from the Navy was worthwhile, it doesn't look like I'll be using it much, since my focus is more on computers than mechanics.
I intend on going to school, taking classes on either Computer Animation or Computer Forensics. Computer Animation is looking appealing since I've always been good at it. I always enjoyed creating artwork, even if I wasn't very good at it, but in a 3D world, I excel.
I've had a number of interviews dealing with HVAC. While I'm going to school, that is likely the job I'll have that'll get me through the classes. It at least uses some of the experience I gained in the Navy, as I did work on the Air Conditioning plant on the submarine.
As far as poetry goes, a happy poet isn't much of a poet, it seems. Since I've been in a better mood, my focus has been on developing a portfolio using 3D Studio and job searching. So far so good!

I'm just poking my head in one last time to say goodbye. I'll be gone for a couple weeks... so... later!

Another Poem. Just thought I'd share.
I've met someone new Who will take me from you
I hope
A distant memory Replaced by new imagry
I hope
And I open my eyes And hope I will rise I will take her hand And leave your land
...
I hope... I hope she will accept me.
A fear instilled in me... By you.
